Malverne has a compact center along Hempstead Avenue, with local businesses, the railroad station, and residential streets close at hand. Its established village layout gives the area a clear sense of place within southwestern Nassau.

Traditional houses, gardens, and mature trees shape much of the streetscape. The character is more about the relationship between the home and the village than a single architectural style. Individual blocks offer their own balance of activity and residential quiet.
