Whitestone combines detached houses, attached homes, and apartment properties across northern Queens. Some residential streets extend toward the East River, while others sit around established commercial corridors farther inland.

The Bronx–Whitestone Bridge is a familiar landmark in the wider landscape. Building styles and lot layouts vary substantially, giving different parts of the neighborhood their own relationship to the waterfront, local shops, and the surrounding street network.
