Hampton Bays occupies a South Fork setting defined by Shinnecock Bay, the nearby Peconic waters, and the canal connecting them. Marine activity and the approach to the ocean beaches are central to the hamlet’s character.

Established neighborhoods, former seasonal houses, and newer residences offer a range of settings. The atmosphere changes between the commercial center, bay-side roads, and inland streets. Water is the connecting thread, with each location providing a different perspective on it.
